History of Toyama Castle

@Located in the center of Toyama PlainCToyama City was originally no more than a small village called Fujii-muraDIn Tenbun12i1543jCpowerful clan led by Mizukoshi KatsushigeCa follower of the Jimbo clanCbuilt a castle and established the foundation of the town we know today as ToyamaD

@For some time after thatCthe castle was ruled by three generations of the Jimbo clanDThey fought wars against the Uesugi clan of EchicoiNiigata PrefecturejD

  In Tensho9i1581jCNobunaga Ode appointed his followerC Sassa Narimasa the governor of ChicoDSeveral consecutive days of rain caused the Jinzu River to floodCbringing the course of the river to the castle's rear gate and making it impregnableDTaking advantage of this opportunityCNarimasa improved and strengthened the castle's defenses by commanding his men dig a riverithe Itachi Riverjto bring water to the east of the castleDAs a resultCthe castle came to be calledethe castle of safe refugefor the efloating fortresD

@Nobunaga Oda was assassinated in Honno|ji Temple in Tensho10DAfter that Narimasa ousted the Uesugi clan and ruled the entire EcchuDGradually the power moved to Hideyoshi ToyotomiD

@NobukatsuCNobunaga's sonCdid not get along with HideyoshiCresulting in the Komaki-Nagakute War in Tensho12DNarimasa was on the side of Nobukatsu and Ieyasu TokugawaCNarimasa wanted to defeat Hideyosi so badly that he even dared to take a long journey to Hamamatsu Castle via the snow overed Zara Pass in Tateyama to persuade Ieyasu to attack HideyoshiDHoweverCIeyasu didn't change his mind and Narimasa returned home depressedD

 In Tensho13i1585jCHideyoshi Toyotomi advanced on the castle with a large force of menDNarimasa had no choice but surrender as he was facing an overwhelming forceDHideyoshi allowed Narimasa to retain only the Niikawa|county area and the rest was given to Toshinaga MaedaD

@Later in Tensho15i1587jCNarimasa was forced to go to HigoiKumamoyo PrefecturejCthus bringing all of the KagaCNoto and Ecchu destricts under Maedafs controlD

@Keicho2i1597jsaw Maedafs eldest son Toshimasa take command of the castleDHis fatherfs death soon brought him back to Kanazawa CastleC where he remained until Kencho10DDuring his absenceCa deputy castellan was assigned to the castle when he returned to ToyamaChe set about improving the fortressD

@HoweverCin Kencho14 the castle was destroyed by fire and Toshinaga had a new castle built in TakaokaDArmor worn by Toshitsuyo MaedaToyama Castle lay neglected and in ruins with only a castle guard for the next thirty yearsD

In Kanei16 ToshitsuguCthe second son of the third generation Maeda clan leader ToshitsuneCestablished a new family and became the founder or the Toyama clan of 100,000 gokuisize of the lordship areajDHe moved into the castle in the following year Kanei17DThirteen generations of Maedafs ruled the castle over a period of 232 years until the Meiji Restoration ended feudal rule in JapanD

@The renovation of the castle began in Kanbun1i1661jC-the keepCthe intermediate outworksCthe outermost outworksCand the tower were constructed and the moat surrounding the castle was dugDHoweverCseveral fires occurredCFa part of the castle was burnt by fire in Empo3i1675jFthe main palace was burnt down in Shotoku 4i1714jGthe keep and some other parts which had been painstakingly reconstructed were destroyed completely in Tempo2i1831jGthe Chitose Palace was wiped out in Ansei2i1855jGand the administration offices were burnt to ashes in Bunkyu 3i1863jDMost of the original structures of the castle had disappeared by the time of the Meiji RestorationDThe remaining buildings were removed eventually and Toyama Prefectural Government Hall was built on the site in Meiji18i1885jDWhen the hall was burnt down in Showa5Cthe site was re-named Joshi ParkD

Brief History of Toyama Municipal Folk Museum@Now Closed

  In 1954 the Toyama Grand Industrial Exposition was held on the grounds of the Joshi ParkDThe idea of building Toyama Castle in commemoration of the exposition began then and developed into a strong movementDThe construction of a three-tieredCfour-storied tower of the Keicho style began in JulyC1953 and finished in March the following yearDA variety of items were exhibited in the tower during the Exposition and subsequently the tower as opened as the Toyama Municipal Folk Museum in NovemberC1954DThe museum displayed the following items on a permanent basisFmaterials which depicted Toyamafs geography and wildlifeChistorical itemsCand works of artDVarious exhibitions have been heldD

@The natural history and science-related exhibits were moved out to Toyama City Science and Culture Center in 1979 and documents regarding the sales of medicines were moved to Toyama City Medicine Museum in 1985DThe current focus is on historical objectsD
