When a foreign national marries Japanese in Japan, the following documents are required to register the marriage at the city hall.


*Required Documents

1) Notice of marriage
2) Certificate of nationality (for instance, a passport is sufficient)
3) Proof of eligibility to marry and/or marital status and certificate of birth issued by the foreigner’s embassy or consulate. (A written oath could be substituted on a case by case basis.)
These documents must be translated into Japanese.
The signature and seal of the translator are required.
