Public Health Insurance in Japan is subsidized by the National Government. As a result, the premium is relatively inexpensive. If you have gone through Foreign Resident Registration procedures and have permission to work or study in Japan for at least one year and are not covered by any other public health insurance, you must join the National Health Insurance.
If you change your residence from Toyama City, you must report to Public Insurance & Pension Plan Division with your health insurance certificate. National Health Insurance covers 70% of medical costs. The insured pays the remaining 30% to the cashier of the hospital, clinic or other medical institution. You should submit your health insurance certificate to the reception desk of the medical institution when you go for treatment for the first time.
National Health Insurance covers the insured, his family, and his dependent relatives.
If your medical costs you paid exceed a certain amount in a month, you can apply for a refund for the amount over it from the National Health Insurance program. Make inquiries at Public Insurance & Pension Plan Division.
